Grand Canyon..the journey begins

"When there is only one way to go ahead, we do. We take it, we march forward and after reaching our destination, we look behind…
at all those moments when we were ready to give up and take the easy way out…
but what if there was only one way to go?"
-Rush
This was my journey…my expedition into the GRAND CANYON.

Grandeur in its true sense, this place will take you 6 million years back in history, will introduce you to eras gone by and depict a story… a tale of rocks, of the unforgiving Colorado river that once streamed along these rocks, today descends the Canyon at its bottom carving and shaping this geological wonder.
My expedition was to touch this origin, to hike down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon to feel the source …
the Colorado River
.

Day one
As we arrive at the Grand Canyon, a quick unravel – Check in at the Bright Angel Lodge, put on my walking shoes and as I step out...a step into the vastness, into a masterpiece, painted by nature alone. Spectacular in its size, it is difficult to capture it all in one glance, but the first look did leave me awestruck.

For a minute there, I couldn’t believe I was going to trek down this massive Canyon come tomorrow morning. With all the preparation and checklist in place, we both decided to retire early for the day.

Day two
the alarm buzzes at 4 am. As I brush up and slip into my hiking clothes, the world is still asleep.

A wildlife welcome before we aboard the bus

We take the 5 am shuttle ride to Yaki point, the starting point to our daylong journey – South Kaibab trail. Aloha to the bus driver and towards the trailhead, as the sun peeks out from the Canyons, highlighting the multicolored rocky walls – a phenomenal view and a perfect start to our hiking day.

The South Kaibab Trailhead

The trail is approx 7 miles with a 5000 feet elevation loss, and as I take my first step into this descend, I leave the touristy crowd behind and march into the unknown....

The first viewpoint on this trail is the Ooh Aah Point, true to its name; the beauty and the drama leaves you motivated and yearning for more!!
As the early morning light brightens one Canyon, it shadows the other, creating and playing off one another. We continued walking further deep into canyons, keeping our pace but not good enough for the shadows. As they decide to lead, it was soon Anil, Me, the Canyon and the roaring Sun...and the camera!

A squirrel digging in for food, and it just doesnt buzz..no matter how hard we tried, so i finally took out the camera and a click!!

Hiking down the open desert one would expect very little green, but the landscapes surprise you with the exotic species they offer, you can literally smell their age. Although the South Kaibab trail has very little shade, it does have a lot of green trailing along the sandy paths.

With every passing hour, the trail got steeper; pushing me to the edge of the Canyon and then taking a sharp turn into the winding path downhill.

Most people think hiking down is easy...it is NOT!! With my toes jamming against the arch of my boot, going down was getting tougher and the rest breaks got longer. We finally sat down to take a lunch break. 3 essentials in my bagpack – 6 litres of water with electrolytes, salty snacks and 2 lunch sacks with lots of muffins. This was helping us move on this extreme breathtaking walk.

The temperature approaches to a 40 degrees C, with the noon sun head on; I suddenly see....

Oye rush not fair...u can cook, write poetry, click pics and now can write like Agatha Christie?? not fair at all to keep people like me in suspense...

That's some awesome hiking you have done. We have to pick out places with lesser hiking time bcoz of the 4 year old hiker (or so we say coz he hikes better than us). But one day Rush we will tread the path taken by u....waiting for the suspense to unravel..

PS: Did Meena get her prize??

We didn't hike cos we had our inlaws with me. But we drove all over the south rim and desert drive and saw the sunset and woke up at 5am to see the sun rise, just amazing! You should go to Page Arizona, they have even wonderful caves and whatnot!

Thnks so much Pavithra.

I can wait either..pratibha.
shud i post it riteaway?

Hahahahah...Kavi,I miss my action packed life in Bombay...so continuing the legacy, keeping all the action alive..otherwise it gets so monotonous here.

Thnks Miss M for dropping by..come in for tomo episode and yeah, it was some trip..i wud say "once in a lifetime trip" and wouldnt attempt it again!!

Safe it is Partha, if one takes all the precautions..can't be beat that - only 2% of the tourists every year make it alive and back from Phantom Ranch...there have been death instances, airliftings etc. and many dont venture into the bottom of the Canyon.

Thnks so much SGD..yes tomo, i will post the conclusion.

The kids are fab Sakshi..in the Phantom ranch, most of the families had kids along, and they were super energetic when we grown ups were almost dead ducks soaking our feet in the Colorado river.

Yeah..one of the few places one must visit, Indrani.

Dont gime bahanas Sj for not hiking..lazybum!!
Yeah heard a lot abt page..will keep something for next year.

Thnks Sana..at the end of the trip, my legs were dead and spirit all charged up at the same time!!

Destinys child - Oooh AAah...anil was screaming the next day getting up from bed..lol

Oye! No bahana nothing my inlaws are almost dead and Jay was almost in coma state - he drove from Las Vegas to grand canyon. The only person who was doing well was me and I didn't feel like leaving them and hiking all by myself so just went and with them :P We did gamble like mad in Belaggio!! :D

Love the Grand Canyon! I went there about 7 years ago and I SO want to go back there with Greg. I went with my parents and brother the first time. Rob and I hiked down a steep area. He held my hand, because I was shaking so much, it was a steep slope down! But it was beautiful. We came to a wall and Rob said, "Listen" I heard the wind whistling around the canyon wall. OMG - I want to go back there SO much and your pictures and stories took me back!

Hey Rush, found the post so interesting that I went thru it again...u left it on the climax:(..lokking forward.
Hey the Indian squirrel doesnt look like this..this one looked more like a cat...if u wouldnt have mentioned I would have thought otherwise ;)

Wow!!!!!!..awesome, cant wait to see the next part. When we went to grand canyon, I wondered how it will be to trek down. When I saw that movie in Imax it was absolutely awesome and fascinating. Lucky you doing all that. I feel bad that I cant walk much, so miss all these beautiful things.

Rush said...

You are right Sangeeta..good guess!!

Sj - Gambling in Las vegas Vs hiking 20 miles in 90degrees F...choice is easy!!

Hi Aleta - yeah most of the crowd we met were regular hikers on 4th of July weekend...
So, which trail did u guys hike?
I can totally resonate with Rob's talking of the wind..the entire place was magical...

lol..Sana, yeah they are huge and so adamant, they have their fav spots and if u try and budge them of it..they will dig their teeth in and stand upto their place. One of our fellow hikers was bit when he trying to feed a squirrel.

Thnks Vani, Deepika, Sujata..will be posting it now.

Hey Renu..its definitely worth a try..maybe a mile down and then you can come back up..that wont be tiring at all...but u have to step into one of the trails to feel the Canyons up and close.

Loved reading the post. We have been to GC quite a few years back & had spent 11 days in North & South Rim Together. Could live their just to see the morning sun over the canyons.. waiting for my 2 kids to grow up a little bit to go again...

Nice pics Rush. Ur write ups are interesting. Heard u need to be really fit to go hiking the canyon. Were u in bed the next week with muscle pulls or was it a cake walk for u?

Rush said...

Thnks Swatantra and priti.

Lol..hobo, that wud have been awesome..i wudnt be here writing a post then ;)

11 days Soma? that must been quite a trip...would love to go again sometime and try something real adventurous!!

Thnks Mani.

You are right Smitha, u have to be fit..we barely had 2 weeks to prepare..and our legs were sore for a day after the hike up.But, if you are used to walking/running everyday for 3 miles, plus have tried hiking elevations, i think u should be fairly good.
